The NORTH Path
Strong foundations are built before we need them
NORTH grew out of a question we kept coming back to:
What helps people and relationships function, not just when life is difficult?
The NORTH Path gives us five places to look:
NOTICE · OWN · RELATE · TALK · HOLD
These aren't just steps to work through in order. Sometimes one matters more than another. Together, they give us a useful way to understand ourselves, the relationships we have with those around us and how we can create systems that allow us all to flourish.
-
What's going on?
We often react to the thing we can see: an argument, a difficult behaviour, a bad day at work. Notice asks us to look more carefully before deciding what the problem is.
What else is taking up attention and energy? What has changed? What's working well? What might we be missing?
You can't change what you haven't noticed.
-
What can I take responsibility for?
We can't control other people, but we do have influence over what we bring to a situation.
Own is about recognising our reactions and understanding what triggers them. It's also about knowing when to pause rather than react automatically.
This isn't about taking the blame. It's about recognising where we have agency.
-
How are we connecting?
Relationships don't only need attention when they're going wrong.
Relate is about whether people feel seen and whether they know they matter. It asks us to pay attention to what happens between people, not simply to each person in isolation.
Sometimes very small changes in how we relate to one another make a surprisingly large difference.
-
Communication that connects
Good communication isn't just about finding better words. Sometimes the important part is listening long enough to understand what someone else is actually saying.
Talk is about being able to have the conversations that matter, including the difficult ones. It also means knowing how to come back together when a conversation hasn't gone well.
-
What keeps us strong?
Not everything that helps us cope is created in the difficult moment.
Hold is about what we put in place over time: the relationships we invest in, the habits we develop and the things we return to when life changes.
It asks a simple question: what are we building now that will still be useful when life gets harder?
NOTICE - What’s going on?
OWN - What can I take responsibility for?
RELATE - How are we connecting?
TALK - What needs to be said or heard?
HOLD - What keeps us strong?
